Starting Small

Every Saturday after the shop closes I'm going to work up a list for the coming week of small things that I've been meaning to do. If the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, then my road must already have been paved over two or three times, at least! For example, I intended this week to finish washing the dishes in my sink, clean the dust off the panels on the doors on my house (that just really bugs me how dust sticks to my 100 year old doors - the finish on them must be somewhat tacky, ick!), spot clean the carpet at the store...I'm sure I could go on, but I won't, it just depresses me!

Here's my list for the coming week:

1. Spot clean the carpet at the shop. It really does need it, and I haven't done it in ages. How do gross dark spots appear like that when we ask people not to bring in food or drink? I wish I knew!

2. Seriously finish washing the dishes in my sink at home. Ok, ok, and the ones piled in the sink at the shop, too. You'd think I ate regular meals with all the silverware dirty...

3. Take my vitamins every single day. Not really something to DO, but something to REMEMBER. I owe it to myself to keep myself feeling good, so I have the energy to do all I need to do!

4. Start a system of organizing the reams of paperwork at the store. Right now, it's just tossed in boxes, which is why it takes me til October each year to actually do my taxes.

5. Send out at least 10 resumes. I've been slacking on this and I can't if I ever expect to pay off all I owe.

6. Get rid of the piles of untagged merchandise behind the counter at the shop.

7. Box up the piles of books at home. Keep some, maybe donate some back to the library bookshop if I don't think I'll want to read them again. I'm a big fan of passing on books to other readers so everyone can enjoy them, but I'll probably keep the Nora Roberts books because I never get tired of re-reading them!

OK, that's 7 items, or roughly one for each day. Good start, I think!

So Much to Do...

but so little time?

Are you doing what you always dreamed of doing with your life? Are you working at a job you love? Do you have the family you always wanted, good relationships with your family, friends, acquaintances?

Do you have time left at the end of each day to reflect on a day well spent, or do you only think of the things you've left unfinished...the piles of laundry yet to be put away, dirty dishes in the sink, piles of work you brought home from the office but didn't finish?

Did you spend your day rushing around, from soccer practice to the grocery store to the dry cleaners, only to remember something left undone, something really, really important?

I think I've finally hit a wall. I'm going to spend the next few weeks or months - however long it takes - working to change the things I no longer like about my life. I don't like it that my house is a mess and only half (if even that) renovated. I don't like it that my business - a children's consignment store - is not yet making serious profits. I want to feel better, eat healthier, pay my bills on time and still have a little leftover each month to save. I want to get out of debt, the debt I acquired opening the store.

That's a lot to take on, I know. Baby steps - a few steps each day - will get me where I want to go. I believe in the snowball effect. Make a few positive changes in your life and more will come on their own.

Let's see if I'm right! Today is the day I start - November 15, 2008.

Welcome to my blog.
